Description

A ride on roller is regularly used in the construction of roads, and the foundations of building projects. They are also sometimes used in agriculture, or at landfill sites.

It uses it’s own weight, normally in the tons, to compress the surface. Types of compaction include rolling, known as static compaction, or mechanical advantage, as in vibration. This type of compaction machine has two smooth drum compactors that compact high spots in the soil or gravel to make a smooth surface.

It is highly recommended that the person operating this type of heavy machinery be licensed to do so through an accredited institution, and is competent during the operation.

Safety procedures and precautions:

Construction sites on or near roads should be closed of from regular traffic flow with the use of appropriate road markings and barriers. traffic flow should be blocked off when taking the machine in or out of the barricaded work area. Workers should always wear approved high visibility clothing when working on a construction site, and especially when this machine is in operation.

Keeping the machine, and steps clear of mud and dirt wil prevent the operator from slipping or falling off of the machine which could be hazardous if the machine is in operation. Ensure that the operator wears suitable footwear. The operator should wear a safety belt when operating the machine.

Do not attempt to traverse or compact slopes that have a gradient above that approved by the manufacturer. Take care turning or manoeuvring the roller when on sloping or unstable ground. Reversing beeper should be operational when the roller is being reversed. Keep clear of open trenches or excavations.

Check the machine before operation. Keep the machine clean.
