A dumpy level, also known as a builder’s auto level, leveling instrument, or automatic level, is an optical tool used in surveying to measure horizontal lines.
Dumpy Level
Description
A dumpy level is most often used to measure relative height an distance between locations and is most often used to gather measurements for the building industry.
It is connected to a tripod which is used to keep it at eye level, and horizontal to the ground. It has a spirit level built in which can be used to ensure that the tool is perfectly level. The instrument can be adjusted and leveled using the leveling screws. It also requires a vertical measuring staff which is used at another location within visible range of the level.
Using this device requires a certain amount of skill and experience.
The dumpy level kit contains the level head, the leveling rod or E meter staff, and the tripod.
